The Most Common Reasons Attorney Practices Disappear From Google Maps — and Exactly How to Fix Each One.
If you’ve searched for your own law firm on Google and found yourself missing from the map results, you’re not alone. Google Maps visibility — technically called the Google Local Pack — is one of the most valuable pieces of online real estate an attorney can have. Appearing in the top three map results for searches like “immigration attorney near me” or “bankruptcy lawyer in [city]” can generate more new client calls than almost any other marketing investment.
So why don’t you show up? Here are the most common reasons — and what to do about each one.
Your Google Business Profile Isn’t Claimed
The most common reason law firms don’t appear on Google Maps is simple — their Google Business Profile hasn’t been claimed and verified. Google creates automatic listings for businesses it discovers online, but unclaimed listings are incomplete, unmanaged, and far less likely to rank.
If you haven’t claimed your listing, go to business.google.com, search for your firm, and claim it. Google will send a verification postcard to your office address — once verified, you control the listing completely.
If you’re not sure whether your listing is claimed, search for your firm name on Google Maps. If you see a “Claim this business” link, it hasn’t been claimed yet.
Your Profile Is Incomplete
Google rewards complete profiles. An incomplete Google Business Profile — missing hours, photos, services, or a description — ranks lower than a fully completed one. Google uses the information in your profile to match your listing to relevant searches.
Make sure your profile includes your exact business name, address, and phone number; accurate and complete business hours including Saturday and Sunday if applicable; a detailed business description using relevant keywords; your practice areas listed as services; at least five photos of your office exterior, interior, and headshot; and your website URL. Every field you leave blank is a missed ranking opportunity.
Your NAP Information Is Inconsistent
NAP stands for Name, Address, and Phone number. Google cross-references your business information across hundreds of online directories — Yelp, Avvo, FindLaw, Justia, and dozens more. If your firm name, address, or phone number appears differently across these directories, Google loses confidence in your listing and ranks it lower.
Common inconsistencies that hurt rankings include “Law Offices of John Smith” vs “John Smith Law Office” vs “John Smith, Attorney at Law”; suite numbers listed on some directories but not others; old phone numbers still appearing on outdated listings; and old addresses from a previous office location.
Run a NAP audit — search your firm name on Google and check the top ten directory results. Any inconsistency needs to be corrected by logging into each directory and updating your information.
You Don’t Have Enough Google Reviews
Google reviews are one of the strongest ranking signals for local map results. A law firm with twenty five-star reviews will almost always outrank a competitor with two reviews — even if the competitor has a better website.
More importantly, the recency of reviews matters. A firm that received ten reviews two years ago and none since will rank lower than a firm that received five reviews in the last six months. Google wants to see ongoing review activity — not a one-time burst.
The best way to get more reviews is simply to ask. Send a direct link to your Google review page to satisfied clients immediately after their matter concludes. A personal email or text with a direct link takes less than sixty seconds to send and can significantly move your map rankings over time.
You’re Not in the Right Service Area
Google uses your business address to determine which searches your listing is relevant for. If your office is in one city but most of your clients come from surrounding areas, you may be missing searches from those locations.
Google Business Profile allows you to set a service area — a list of cities, counties, or regions you serve — in addition to your physical address. Setting your service area correctly tells Google which geographic searches your listing should appear for. Go to your Google Business Profile, edit your profile, find the Service area section, and add every city, county, or region you actively serve.
Your Website Isn’t Optimized for Local Search
Your Google Business Profile and your website work together. Google looks at your website to confirm and expand the information in your profile. A website with no local SEO signals — no city name in the title tags, no local content, no location-specific pages — sends weak signals to Google about where you practice.
Make sure your website includes your city and state in your homepage title tag; your full address in the footer of every page; local content including blog posts, practice area pages, and FAQ answers that mention your city and region; and schema markup identifying your business as a local law firm.
Your Listing Was Suspended
Google occasionally suspends Google Business profiles — particularly for service-area businesses or businesses that have changed addresses. A suspended listing simply disappears from Maps with no notification.
Check your listing status at business.google.com. If it shows as suspended, Google provides an appeal process where you can verify your information and request reinstatement.
What to Do Next
If your law firm isn’t showing up on Google Maps, start with these steps in order:
First, claim and verify your Google Business Profile if you haven’t already. Second, complete every field in your profile — hours, photos, services, and description. Third, audit your NAP consistency across major directories. Fourth, set your service area to include every city and region you serve. Fifth, start actively collecting Google reviews from satisfied clients.
Map visibility doesn’t happen overnight — but consistent attention to your Google Business Profile, combined with a well-optimized website, compounds over time into a steady stream of new client inquiries.
